Summer Watermelon Salad

Vulnerability is asking for help.  Vulnerability is inviting a friend into a dirty house.  Vulnerability is telling someone you love them, first.  Vulnerability is showing up to the first social event after your wedding was called off.  Vulnerability is walking back after a fight.  Vulnerability is going to a friend’s baby shower after your miscarriage.  Vulnerability is going to your boss for a much needed raise.  Vulnerability is asking a friend for a recommendation on a therapist.  Vulnerability is calling the suicide prevention hot line.  Vulnerability is saying “I am sorry” when we’ve made a mistake.  Vulnerability is talking about money to your partner.  Vulnerability is being kind to someone who isn’t so kind.  Vulnerability is doing what you love, not what someone else wants you to do.  Vulnerability is bringing someone home to a family of disfunction.  Vulnerability is saying yes to marriage a second, third or fourth time. Vulnerability is saying no or yes. Vulnerability is writing and putting it anywhere where someone may read it.  Vulnerability is showing your craft.

Courage is doing the above anyway.

I was thinking about these things and others that are hard, really hard to do.  Brené Brown talks about this extensively and has done multiple studies, ted talks, podcasts and books on this very subject.   One of my favorite of her books is “The gift of Imperfection:Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you are”. Perfection keeps me from completing most anything. Feel free to mix in your own additions like colorful yellow and red cherry tomatoes, omit the Serrano and/or add mint. Go wild. It feels good. 😉

Ingredients

6 cups watermelon

2 mangos peeled and diced

2 Persian cucumber chopped into bite sized pieces

Bunch Basil chopped

Bunch Cilantro chopped

Serrano Pepper sliced thinly

2 tablespoons tamari or other soy

Thumb size ginger grated

1/2 juicy lime juiced

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

Directions

In a large bowl, combine watermelon, mango, cucumber, basil, cilantro and Serrano pepper.  In a separate smaller bowl mix Tamari, ginger, lime and rice vinegar.  Pour over watermelon mixture, fold together, serve and enjoy!
